What's Your Story? An Introduction to Storytelling

"Storytelling" is one of the keys to being a good artist. The art of storytelling is also essential for fundraising, marketing, pitching, presentations, job interviews, and so much more. However, not everyone can tell you what a story is and how to tell it effectively.
Join Neil Thornton, award-winning teacher, comedian, and writer, for a 3-hour introduction to the art of storytelling, the true kind, drawn from your own life.
This is a broader version of the storytelling class Neil usually teaches. Same content, wider aim: come whether you want to get on stage or just want your pitch to land or your grant to be funded.
Part 1
Why do we tell stories?
What is a story, beyond "beginning, middle, and end"?
What is the difference between an anecdote or a hypothetical and a meaningful, compelling story?
Part 2
How do we find stories from our past and present lives? What are the tools to unlock and unblock our creativity, access memories, and write around our internal critics?
How do we structure and edit a story for maximum effect on our audience?
What are tools used by storytellers, writers, and filmmakers to craft a great story?
Part 3
Storytelling for the stage (or in person). How do storytellers at The Moth, the Fringe, or TED deliver a story with emotion, stage presence, and the appearance of confidence? (The appearance is the achievable part. Everyone is nervous.)

About Neil Thornton
Neil Thornton is a teacher, writer, and comedian based in Wellington. He has been teaching for more than 30 years, holds an MFA in writing from the University of New Orleans, and taught university English for nine years before founding the NZ Comedy School, where he has trained more than 600 students in standup and storytelling. His awards include Outstanding Contribution to the Industry at the NZ Comedy Guild Awards, and Best MC and Best Comedian at the Wellington Comedy Awards.
